Z440 CPU Compatible Upgrades

This is my first post to this board.  My complete system specs are listed in my profile.  I’m old.  My back ground extends back to the IBM 1130, FORTRAN, COBOL, Core Memory and 4 MWord Disk Drives.  I studied Tube Theory in College.  I could, if asked, still bootstrap a DEC PDP-8, but I’m having a hard time keeping up with tech advancements.

It looks like the E5-2678 V3 was custom made for an OEM.  On eBay it is listed as “The same as” E5-2680 V3.  If that is so, why the custom make?  It seems to me there must be some difference that could lead to its not working in my z440.

I believe the HP White Paper on the z440 states that the E5-26xx series is compatible.  If I limit myself to those E5-26xx series that support the FCLGA2011-3 socket and operate at a TDP close to 140W, would I be safe?

I am looking at these, specifically, however there are others also.

Intel Xeon E5-2650 v3,  E5-2687W v3, E5-2687W v4,  E5-2680 v3
