That 840 supports thunderbolt 2. There is no way to update thunderbolt on a motherboard so you can't even go with the now "old" thunderbolt 3. Also not certain but you may be stuck with the actual HP thunderbolt 2 card. I don't know if other brands will work. Just curious what do you want to hook up to? I've given up on the idea thunderbolt could really be useful to me.

I thought that adding a PCIE card from one of the links I sent here above could allow me to boost my Z840 a bit like a graphics card.
These 2 models offer video output 4k and more (which would have replaced my graphics card) in USB-C and the transfer rate is 40 Gb/s.
In the Greengamers site there is no mention of which PCIE thunderbolt card model (2 preferably 3) is supported on the Z840, any idea?-
MikeL your system can run thunderbolt 2 nothing else. Also it cannot replace your graphics card. Thunderbolt can do video passthrough. Still requires a video source. If you just want high speed connectivity I'd like into a USB 3.2 gen 2 card. Again you need to own something to hook up to it. I've been playing with different ideas in my head for a while on what I'd like to do. So far the best I've come up with is just a total lack of USB bandwidth using multiple high speed devices. There are a few companies out there that sell USB cards with individual controllers for each port. Again this only matters if you have let's say multiple external drives or high speed equipment. Not all that usual.

But regardless what do you use or want to use your PC for? I can make good recommendations on what you should upgrade. I'd also need to know what your current configuration is. Cpu,GPU memory,drives, psu ect..

MikeL whoa monster system by the way. So a couple of questions because even though I'm not a video editor I have some experience setting this up. The software you use. Can it make use of all those cores? The few different types I've used could not utilize a 6 core cpu. Your gpu is obviously dated. You really don't need to stick with a quadro card. The last one I did I installed a gtx 1650 super which again the software could not fully utilize. Your m.2 2tb is that a NVME drive or an m.2 sata drive? And if its not obvious 128gb of ram is good enough for anything you could dream up at home.
In regards to the usb card you just posted. Just remember it can only transfer as fast as what your hooking up to it. but yes if the reviews on that card are good I'd get it.
And I'll wait to hear back on the questions I just asked you but If at all curious the video editing rig I did for someone last year. used a 6 core xeon v3, 32gb ram, 500gb sata ssd boot disc, 1tb nvme for programs and editing , 2 4tb hdds for storage and the gtx 1650 super as the gpu. Like I said though I had a hard time getting a few different types of editing software to really pull the resources that pc had.

I use Adobe Premier Pro for editing and I want to edit 4k and up if it’s possible of video foootage.
My NVMe is a PCIe connect to the Slot #6 (fastest of the 6 slots) more that 2000mb/s!
Thanks again for the graphics card suggestions, the bad news is that this system does not support Windows 11, hoping maybe a hacker can break this OS lol!!

fyi the cheapest easiest card to buy right now is a quadro t400. very low end however 300 percent faster than your quardo 2000. not saying to go with the 400 because there are much stronger options out there....if you want to spend the money but you get the point.

MikeL so premier pro claims it can run at about 98 percent on 8 cores. Faster the better. So if that's the case and xeon v3s are fairly cheap I'd look at getting ones with a lower core count and higher speed. E5-2643v3 or E5-2667v3 would be good choices. Graphics cards are so messed up right now. I'd suggest buying the strongest one you can afford. Premier pro recommends 4gb VRAM minimum. Other than that I'd invest in more storage if you plan on having 4k files on there. The more open space you have on that nvme the faster it will be. I'd load all your video files for editing straight onto it and after the file is finished I'd move them to a HDD.

Yes, I'm thinking of changing my graphics card soon, but I'm afraid to pay hardware for nothing with this system when Windows 10 will not be secure since October 14, 2025!

MikeL what do you think that you can't reuse? Granted everything will be even more dated in 2025 but a good current GPU will still be good then. Your drives will still work. Give it time anyways I really wouldn't worry about it. You should be able to update to tpm2.0 on your machine. That leaves your cpu being the only non compatible item for windows 11. Someone will work that out. And if not there will be options past that. Windows 7 ended up getting security updates past getting the update saying there would be no more....and oems like Dell only have 1 generation of workstations the current one that can use it. My system which is a 5810 is only 1 gen old. Most of there business systems get supported for 10+ years. I can't imagine they will be ok with all of them no longer being "secure" and worst case pull your system off the network and use it forever. Don't have to worry about security features If your not hooked to the net. If you can justify right now spending the money on another dual cpu workstation go for it. Myself in 2025 a system from 2020 that's compatible with windows 11 is going to cost 400 bucks vs 8 grand right now. I can go on Dell and configure a t5820 that cost about 18k lol. Very near to the performance I currently have with my sub 1,000 t5810.

Oh good system you have! I bought this HP because in my company we work with it.
I'm glad to know that it is possible to update tpm2.0 on my HP.
For the storage I have a lot of Samsung T5, T7 I'm going to manage quite well with that at first.

MikeL just to let you know I'm only assuming you can update to 2.0. you should look on hp's driver listings. Also I don't really have anything negative to say about external SSD storage other than I prefer local with a backup. The server I run with a couple of friends uses large internal storage and a online service called backblaze. Very reasonable on pricing and we did have to use it. Large drives were mailed to us for a deposit which we got back after we returned the drives.

I have 2Tb with my M.2 it’s more than enough for one project at a time then once the project is finished, I transfer to USB. It's safe in the local disk it's faster, that's why I bought the M.2
