Unfortunately, the T5500 do not support UEFI and secure boot (TPM) is too old. While you can use a UEFI emulator such as Clover and Chameleon, you will have a even greater dealbreaker with the lack of any AVX instructions on your CPUs if Windows 11 decides to use those features before release. Currently, there are simple fixes to get it to boot with older machines, but more than likely Microsoft will patch those out before release. My only suggestion is to wait for the official release and see if any safe patches or fixes will be allow Windows 11 to boot from older machines.

Frank Byers It sucks, yes, but you're not the only one affected. Even some with the later E5 CPUs are not on the list. All I can suggest is wait until more hard info is available.
You can enable TPM 1.2 on your current hardware by pressing F12 on boot then selecting "security". Even with that, the info I can find on W11 is still spotty at best and I cannot recommend downloading a "patched" W11 installer since the ones currently floating around are infected. If there's a way in the future to install W11 safely on your hardware, you'll bet there will be a way in doing so, but until then, it's just a waiting game.

Tony G Thanks for the post! Though for a lot of people here, their computers are older than the ones listed (the oldest I've seen on that list was from 2017). Microsoft might lighten their requirements before release, so here's hoping.

stormson weathers Yes, I’m a bit like Frank running three T5500 (dual CPU’s) and been quite happy with the performance of this model running three different operating systems on them over the past decade (WinXP, Win7, and Win10). While Windows 10 end-of-support is Oct-2025, I’ve got to say that given the T7500/5500/3500 series were released in 2009 thereabouts, then a possible 15/16 years of service is a pretty good run for them (I’ll try and squeeze a bit more life out them). It’s been a joy but will have to bite the bullet at some point as Microsoft and Dell will not see it economical to continue supporting these aging systems, drivers and the like. It's sad because it creates enormous electronic waste. I am myself deciding what model I should pick next (for my budget), to replace these systems so as to future proof for similar scenarios ahead.

Tony G It's not just systems though, even ones going past 2016 and even some of Microsoft's own Surface tablets will not be supported. The Tx600 are also axed, but since most of my VM work is on Linux anyways, it's a no-issue for me, but those that rely on Windows software can't say the same and new hardware is coming in at a premium due to chip shortages.

Tony G So does Windows 10 work 'fine' on T5500, or did you have to do a lot of tweaking? It seems to be a problem with big companies not prepared to test all their software/hardware with every new technology which comes along. I was hoping to run ESXi 7.0 but it is not compatible! (i.e. not tested by VMWare).

Robert Eadie The T5500 can run Windows 10 without issue. If you use 8+ gb of ram and an SSD, youll see a very smooth experience even with low-end cpus.

Robert Eadie Yes, Windows 10 runs fine on the T5500. Only minor issue I have is with the with audio that intermittently drops the volume level to zero. Tried many tweaks to solve this but to no avail so I just put up with it and re-adjust the audio level.

Tony G I have never had any problems running win 10 pro on any T5500 's as of now i have 5 T5500's with windows 10 pro OS on them. I am waiting on a fix too INSTALL WINDOWS 11 on the same 5

Robert Eadie NOT SURE AT THIS POINT I HAVE SEEN SEVERAL POSTS OF THE TPM AN UEFI GO AROUND BUT NONE HAVE WORKED FOR ME. SOME ONE IN THIS GROUP HAD POSTED A GO AROUND BUT A GAIN I COULD NOT GET IT TO WORK. SO TO ANSWER YOUR QUESTION . I DO NOT KNOW AT THIS POINT

I used rufus to make a windows 10 Pro bootable usb
Then using a Windows 11 Pro image copied the /Source/install.wim and replaced the windows the windows 10 install.wim -

I've done both a fresh install and a upgrade from Windows 10 install( had to run the setupprep.exe in the source folder, select do not check for updates. When I get some time will do a video. -

Windows 11 Unsupported
Step 1: Make a Windows 10 USB Installer with Rufus
Step 2: Open Windows 11 ISO and copy the install.wim “Exp E:\sources\install.wim”
Step 3: Past and replace into the windows 10 sources folder, “Exp F:\sources”
Win 10 Upgrade
Step 4: On the Windows 10 USB got the sources folder and run “\sources\setupprep.exe”
Step 5: IMPORTANT, Select “Change how Windows Setup downloads updates” and chouse “Not right now”
Step 6: Continue the setup process and you will be running windows 11 on your unsupported hardware.
